X-Rated: Adult Movie Posters of The 60s and 70s

Peter Bradshaw
Tacky, squalid, unwholesome, subversive, funny and horribly fascinating.
These are posters advertising porn films of the 1960s and 1970s
- most never before published - collected by Tony Nourmand and Graham
Marsh, who between them have made collections of Bond and Hitchcock
posters and Blue Note LP cover sleeves.
Like archaeologists, they have uncovered discarded artefacts of
abysmal smut and hilarious shame. Almost all these bizarre images
have a furtive, amateurish air about them; they were never meant
to be seen in daylight. Along with posters for well-known porn flicks
like Behind the Green Door, there are strangely unedifying works
like A Smell of Honey, A Swallow of Brine. Afternoon Tease promises
"a brisk brouhaha of bawdy broads and benevolent bachelors".
There's Danish Pastries ("see it with someone you'd like to
love") and Days of Sin and Nights of Nymphomania ("Beyond
Booze!") And classicists will appreciate Lysistrata ("3000-year-old
sex classic goes MOD!")
